The Norwegian bridge in the city of Tromsø got lit up this August. The designer responsible for the job was Norwegian LD Torbjørn Thrane Sandnes, and the equipment supplied by Audionor AS.
The scope of the project involved lighting up the bridge’s pillars, creating an even wash of colour through the 1km bridge. “We placed the luminaires inside 3 towers, each measuring 20m3, supported by scaffolding and made of polycarbonate glass, so that it would protect the fixtures from the rain, wind and sea water”, said Torbjørn. He added: “Each tower was loaded with 4 MAC Quantum Wash and 4 Rush MH7 fixtures, totalling 12 of each unit”.
The totality of the fixtures were setup in one day and programming and focusing during the same evening. The light installation ran for 5 days. “One of the bigger challenges with a project like was having the whole bridge evenly lit, but still avoiding blinding nearby residential areas and bigger cruise boats passing under the bridge at night. None of the fixtures had a framing system, and we needed to punch out every possible lumen out of the lights”, said Sandnes.
The control desk used by the LD was an MA2 Command Wing, with a BlackBox F-1 G5 sending out DMX data to two BlackBox R-512 G5 receivers placed at two towers. “Because we had lights scattered far from the control point, we decided to go for Wireless DMX. Using wired signal was never really an option. I’ve used W-DMX™ on several different projects along my years as an LD, not only in installations but also touring and temporary events like this one. I have only had good experiences with W-DMX’s products. That’s why we didn’t even hesitate when I proposed the solution” he added.
The LD also tells how easy it was to use: “It was just plug and play, we linked all units, drove over the tower, plugged the DMX in and it worked straight away. We never had an issue, dropout or interference during the whole week we were there”.
