It’s time for some major changes in the world of wireless DMX. We, Wireless Solution, are pleased to, together with our friends at LumenRadio, announce the emergence of a global de facto standard for wireless DMX.
No more end-user confusion about what fixtures will work with what brands of transmitters, etc.
“We’ve received requests from the market for a standard wireless DMX solution for many years now. And finally, through the acquisition of Wireless Solution last year, we are now in a position to do something about it”, says Robert Larsson, Business Area Manager at Wireless Solution and LumenRadio.
The first step to unify the W-DMX and CRMX technologies was with the release of BlackBox G6 at the end of 2020, which included optional CRMX. This made it possible for W-DMX users to control CRMX equipment for the first time, bringing the technologies one step closer together.
Now, the next step is taken by launching a new OEM offering to fixture manufacturers that incorporates support for both the W-DMX and CRMX technologies, eliminating the need for users to worry about compatibility. We are now entering a new era of a global de facto standard for wireless DMX to a million fixtures each year.
The new OEM offering comprises a full range of solutions, from chip based solutions, to surface-mount modules, and modules with pin headers, to ensure that there is a suitable option regardless of size constraints, volume or level of integration.
The first cross-compatible modules from Wireless Solution will be available during the fall, with the full range of the offering being available before the end of the year.
Q: Will this cross-compatibility work with all wireless DMX options that exist on the market today?
A: With over one million fixtures incorporating W-DMX and CRMX per year, we dare to say that this solution works with almost all wireless fixtures out there. There might be some oddballs out there though.
Q: Will the cross-compatible functionality be available to already existing fixtures on the market?
A: Fixtures which currently incorporate W-DMX G5 TiNY modules will require a hardware upgrade to take part of these new possibilities. Fixtures using other W-DMX modules may not be upgradeable. For specific fixtures, please contact the respective manufacturer.
Q: Will there be new W-DMX hardware to support cross-compatibility?
A: Yes. We will release an updated version of the W-DMX “TiNY TRX G5” module called “TiNY FX”. It will be available at the end of the year. There will also be new surface mounted options available later this year.
Q: When will the new offering be available?
A: Before the end of the year to OEM customers.
Q: Will this require any updates to my W-DMX transmitters?
A: No. The built-in receivers in the fixtures will automatically adjust themselves to the protocol used by the transmitter.
Q: Why are there still two protocols?
A: In respect to the large amount of equipment already out there, we have chosen to keep both technologies to not make any previously purchased equipment obsolete. Instead we’re making the merging seamless for the end user.
Q: How will the receivers know if they should listen to CRMX or W-DMX?
A: The receivers will auto-detect the protocol used by the transmitter. No need for the end-user to make any configurations at all on the receivers.
